Brief

Giant pandas are more than just cute animals — they’re key players in China’s global diplomacy. Known as “Panda Diplomacy,” China has used its iconic bears to strengthen international relationships and influence global politics for centuries. Learn how these animals serve as soft power tools in China’s foreign policy, fostering diplomatic goodwill and smoothing tensions with other nations.

Overview

Skip Montreux and Dez Morgan explore the unique role that pandas play in global diplomacy. They trace the history of Panda Diplomacy, explain why China leases rather than sells its pandas to foreign zoos, and dive into the economic and political impact of these adorable ambassadors. From the high cost of leasing pandas to recent developments in U.S.-China relations, this episode provides an in-depth look at how pandas are wielded as diplomatic envoys.

Skip and Dez’s discussion offers valuable insights into both Panda Diplomacy and business English. Key points include:

  • China’s panda leasing program comes with hefty fees, costing zoos around $1 million per year.
  • Breeding giant pandas in captivity is not only a rare event but also a lucrative one for China.

  1. Thank you so much for your kind words Miya! We are glad to hear you are enjoying the reports and topics.

Regarding the instructions surrounding the Members-only RSS Feed — thank you for pointing that out. It is good to hear you discovered “Follow the show by URL” in Apple Podcasts, but you are right, it may not be very clear if you don’t know about it.

We will try to make the instructions more clear.

    Cheers,
    Skip

  2. Hi Skip, Dez, and Samantha,
I’ve been following D2B English for almost 2 years. I absolutely love your program and have learned so much from it. I just wanted to let you know that you’re churning out great episodes! I especially appreciate the recent RSS member feed feature, which saves me a lot of effort and allows me to keep up with new episodes without switching platforms.
Nonetheless, I found the RSS instruction on the members page to “paste it into your podcatcher” a bit confusing, as I’m not familiar with what a “catcher” was. For Apple Podcasts, I tried to paste it to the podcast’s search bar but no results find. Eventually, here’s what I did: I went to the library – tapped the three dots in the top right corner – tapped “Follow the show by URL.” A tick appeared, and it worked. I think it might be worth noting the key phrase to look for here is “Follow the show by URL.” I hope this clarification might help other users too! Best.
